アレキパへの日本人観光客はまだ少ないのですが、アレキパはペルー第二の都市で世界遺産に指定された町です。近年、アレキパは、古いアンデスの文化とスペイン植民地時代の文化が渾然一体に混ざり合った町として変化しながら発展しています。アレキパは、ペルーの観光地、クスコ、プーノ、チチカカ湖、地上絵で有名なナスカなど、ペルー各地の観光地への中継地点であるだけでく、隣国のチリやボリビアへの交通の便も良いです。アレキパにはアメリカのグランド・キャニオンよりも深いコルカ・キャニオン、さらに深いコタワシ・キャニオン、温泉地チバイやユーラ、海水浴もできる海岸の町モジェンドやメヒーア、１２００年以上前の岩絵が５０００個以上も残るトーロ・ムエルト、５０００メートル級で富士山にそっくりのミスティ山、６０００メートル級の雄大なチャチャニ山、インカ時代のミイラ・ファニータとサリータの発見されたアンパト山などがあり、自然に恵まれた観光地です。アレキパの町には植民地時代の建造物が多く、特にアレキパ特有の白い石で作られた建築が有名です。アレキパは都市と田園の共存する町としても有名で、町の中にのんびりとした田園風景も残っています。また、ペルーを代表する郷土料理の豊富な地でもあります。ぜひ、アレキパへいらしてください。テルーニョ・デ・ヤラバヤとはスペイン語で「ヤラバヤの故郷」という意味で、その昔、スペイン人が支配する以前に先住民「ヤラバヤ」が、ペンションの有るサン・ラサロ地区に住んで、農業を営んでいたということからつけた名前です。

Terruño de Yarabaya is a safe, clean and home-away-from-home kind of small hotel located in downtown Arequipa. "Terruño de Yarabaya" means "Yarabaya's country". Yarabaya was a native community that had been living in San Lazaro area before the conquest of the Spanish.

We're just back from 17 days in Ecuador and Peru. In Arequipa, we stayed at Terruño de Yarabaya, a guesthouse around the corner from Jerusalen St. and about 6 long blocks from Plaza de Armas in an old residential neighborhood. Paying $38/night, we had an immaculate suite (bedroom w/great mattress, bath w/very hot water!, dining room/living room and small kitchen area w/dishes & silverware)-- and daily breakfast on the rooftop terrace (looking out on the city and surrounding mountains!). We were served a different breakfast each morning! Our hostess was a young Japanese woman who went to Peru to attend college, and her dear friend Paolo. They do all they can to make guests feel at home. Mayuko's English is excellent; we learned so much from talking with her about Peruvians and their culture. They were also most helpful with recommendations of places to see.
